If you’re looking for a simple and effective DIY mosquito and tick repellent, this all-natural bug spray is a must-try. It’s made with witch hazel and powerful essential oils known to keep biting bugs away without the harsh chemicals you’ll find in store-bought sprays. Whether you’re gardening, hiking, camping, or just enjoying the backyard, this DIY mosquito repellent spray helps keep both mosquitoes and ticks at bay while being safe for most skin types and gentle on the environment.

In today's post, I’m sharing my go-to recipe for a simple, natural bug spray made with essential oils that helps keep pests away. I’ll walk you through why each ingredient works, so you’re not just mixing things—you’re understanding them. This has been a game-changer for our outdoor time, and I hope it helps you enjoy the fresh air without all the bites. Let’s dive in!
I decided to make my own DIY mosquito repellent one day when my family and I were outside, trying to enjoy a summer evening. It was hot and humid, and we were all spraying ourselves down with a store-bought bug spray. As I looked around, I noticed this thick mist hanging in the air—a cloud of chemicals we were all breathing in. It hit me that not only was it harsh-smelling and clearly not great for the environment, but all of those ingredients were also absorbing into our skin. And the worst part? It didn’t even work for some of us. That’s when I started researching natural alternatives and decided to create an all-natural bug spray that’s safer, smells better, and actually works.

🌿
Why Choose a Natural Bug Spray?
Commercial insect repellents often contain DEET and other synthetic chemicals. While they can be effective, many people prefer a more natural alternative, especially for use on children or when spending long periods outdoors.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Should be used in small amounts due to potency
4. Citronella Oil
One of the most common natural mosquito repellents
Works by masking scents that attract insects
5. Geranium Oil
Especially effective against ticks
Pleasant floral scent
A great alternative if you avoid citronella
6. Lemongrass Oil
Sharp citrus aroma deters mosquitoes
Adds a clean, fresh scent to the spray

🌿 Friendly Reminder: Use Safely
This DIY bug spray is made with natural ingredients and essential oils, but it’s always a good idea to be cautious. Essential oils are powerful, so please do a quick patch test on a small area of skin before using them more widely, especially if you have sensitive skin. Keep it out of your eyes and mouth, and avoid using it on babies, pets, or anyone with allergies to the ingredients without consulting a healthcare provider first. If you notice any irritation, wash it off and discontinue use.
