I never imagined making homemade chamomile lotion could be so simple and affordable! I’ve made plenty of body butter and dry skin balms, but for some reason, I always assumed lotion would be tricky—getting the right consistency seemed complicated, and I thought it would require expensive ingredients. But when I tried this easy chamomile lotion recipe, I was amazed at how effortlessly it came together with just a few natural ingredients. The result? A beautifully smooth, nourishing lotion that leaves my skin incredibly soft and hydrated.

If you’re new to making homemade lotion, this recipe is perfect for you! It requires just a few simple ingredients and comes together quickly. Once your chamomile-infused oil is ready, you’ll have a soothing, skin-loving base that is especially great for sensitive skin. Just like chamomile tea helps calm us from the inside, chamomile extract works wonders on the outside. If you struggle with inflammation or highly sensitive skin, this gentle herb is a must-have in your skincare routine.

You’re going to love homemade chamomile lotion because it’s gentle, calming, and made with ingredients you can pronounce. Unlike many store-bought lotions that are packed with synthetic fragrances and preservatives, this DIY version is infused with soothing chamomile—an herb known for its anti-inflammatory and skin-calming properties. It’s especially perfect for sensitive skin, helping to reduce redness, irritation, and dryness without causing breakouts or discomfort. Whether you’re dealing with seasonal skin changes or mild eczema or `want a nourishing daily moisturizer, this homemade chamomile lotion is a natural way to pamper your skin and keep it soft, healthy, and hydrated.

This chamomile lotion recipe starts with chamomile-infused oil, which is incredibly easy to make! You’ll need to prepare the chamomile oil two weeks ahead of time before making your lotion. To make chamomile-infused oil simply place dried chamomile flowers in a jar, cover them with your chosen oil, and let the mixture sit in a sunny window for two weeks. This slow infusion allows the oil to absorb all the soothing, skin-nourishing benefits of chamomile—creating the perfect base for your homemade lotion!

For this recipe, I recommend using sweet almond oil because it’s lightweight, absorbs well, and has a mild scent. However, you can easily swap it out for other light oils or choose richer options like olive oil or jojoba oil if you have dry skin and need extra hydration.

Does Homemade Chamomile Lotion Soothe Sunburns?

Yes, homemade chamomile lotion can help soothe sunburn, thanks to chamomile’s natural anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

Here’s how it helps:

• Chamomile reduces redness and inflammation, which makes it great for calming irritated, sunburned skin.

• If your lotion includes aloe vera, coconut oil, or shea butter, it can also help with cooling, hydration, and skin repair.

• The gentle nature of chamomile makes it especially good for sensitive or tender skin after too much sun exposure.

Tip:

For best results, keep the lotion in the fridge before applying it to sunburned areas—it’ll feel extra soothing!

How To Make Homemade Chamomile Lotion

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup chamomile-infused oil (see instructions below)

  • ¼ cup shea butter or cocoa butter

  • 2 tbsp beeswax pastilles (or candelilla wax for a vegan version)

  • ¼ cup aloe vera gel (optional for extra soothing)

  • 10 drops of chamomile essential oil

  • 5 drops of vitamin E oil (acts as a natural preservative)

Step 1: Make Chamomile-Infused Oil

1. ½ cup of dried chamomile flowers in a clean jar.

2. Pour sweet almond, jojoba, or olive oil over the flowers until fully submerged.

3. Let the jar sit in a warm, sunny spot for about 1-2 weeks, shaking it occasionally.

4. Strain out the chamomile flowers using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

Step 2: Make the Lotion

  • 1. In a double boiler (or a heat-safe bowl over simmering water) melt the beeswax and shea butter.

  • 2. Add the chamomile-infused oil and stir until everything is fully combined.

  • 3. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  • 4. Slowly whisk in the aloe vera gel (if using).

  • 5. Add chamomile essential oil ( optional) and vitamin E oil, stirring well.

  • 6. Pour the lotion into a clean jar or pump bottle.

Storage & Use:

• Store in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months.

• Apply as needed to soothe dry or irritated skin.

To store your chamomile lotion, you can reuse an old lotion bottle with a pour spout, or you might find empty bottles at places like Dollar Tree. I also like to use a mason jar with a lid, which works perfectly fine.
