DIY Non-Toxic Wasp Spray

Learn how to eliminate wasps with this DIY non-toxic wasp spray that's easy to make using Dawn dish soap and essential oil. Safe, effective, and Simple!

Dealing with wasps can be challenging, especially if you're seeking a non-toxic, environmentally friendly solution. Consider making a homemade wasp spray that avoids toxic chemicals and is better for our planet.

Summer brings beautiful weather but also unwelcome pests like wasps. To tackle this problem, l use a homemade all-natural wasp spray made with essential oils and Dawn dish soap. It's quick to mix up, so you can deal with the wasps and enjoy your time outdoors. I don't typically advocate for killing insects without cause, but wasp stings are a frequent and painful issue during the summer months.

When they find their way into my shed or screened-in porch, I have to take action. Spraying toxic wasp spray from the store in areas where my family and I spend time isn't ideal, as I prefer to avoid inhaling those chemicals if possible. After extensive research, I found a DIY non-toxic wasp deterrent that not only eliminates wasps but also helps keep them away, so you don't have to resort to killing the wasps in your space. Let’s go over some great commonly asked questions.

Commonly Asked Questions

What scents do wasps dislike?

Wasps dislike several scents, particularly those of certain essential oils. Some of the most effective scents for repelling wasps include: Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Clove, Citronella, and Lemon. Using these essential oils along with lemon juice in your DIY spray can help deter wasps and keep them away from your outdoor spaces.

Do I have to use essential oils in my DIY wasp spray, or can I just use lemon juice?

Yes, you can use lemon juice as a natural wasp deterrent. While essential oils are often more concentrated and effective, lemon juice can still be a useful alternative.

Can I use only Dawn dish soap and water in DIY wasp spray?

If you're just looking to kill the wasps, Dawn dish soap alone will work. The essential oils act as a deterrent.

To make a DIY lemon juice wasp spray deterrent:

1. Mix equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle.

2. Shake well to combine.

3. Spray the mixture in areas where you want to deter wasps, such as around doors, windows, and outdoor seating areas. Keep in mind that lemon juice might need to be reapplied more frequently than essential oil sprays, as its scent can dissipate more quickly.

How to make a DIY wasp killer and deterrent:

Ingredients

2 tablespoons Dawn dish soap: This powerful soap helps break down the exoskeletons of insects, making it an effective bug killer.

10-15 drops Essential oil: Choose an essential oil with insect-repelling properties, such as peppermint, citronella, eucalyptus, lemon, or clove.

2 tablespoons lemon juice: Lemon juice deters wasps primarily due to its strong acidic scent and taste, which is unpleasant to them.

8 oz of Water: To dilute the mixture and make it easy to spray.

Instructions

1. Mix the ingredients: In a spray bottle, combine 2 tablespoon of Dawn dish soap and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 10-15 drops of your chosen essential oil. Fill the rest of the bottle with 8oz of water and shake well to mix.

2. Test the spray: Before using the spray on a larger area, test it on a small, inconspicuous spot to ensure it doesn't damage surfaces.

3. Apply the spray: Spray directly on wasps, other insects, or areas where they are commonly found. I spray the wood and base of the furniture in my screened porch to deter the wasps. Store your DIY wasp spray in a cool place to maintain its effectiveness and reapply regularly, especially in areas with high wasp activity.

When using essential oils in bug sprays or all-natural cleaners, it's best to use a glass spray bottle. Glass bottles are more durable and less likely to degrade over time compared to plastic when in contact with essential oils.
