But perhaps the greatest joy comes from sharing these warm, fragrant tortillas with loved ones, knowing that each bite carries nourishment and a piece of your heart.

How long does it take to make homemade tortillas?

Preparing the tortilla dough is quick, taking just a few minutes, followed by 4 to 5 minutes of kneading. Then, it's important to let the dough rest for 30 minutes to achieve a soft and pliable texture. After resting, you'll cut the dough into eight pieces, roll them into balls, and let them rest for another 45 minutes. While the dough requires waiting periods for resting, the preparation itself is speedy.

Should I use oil in the pan when cooking homemade tortillas?

You don't necessarily need oil in the pan to cook homemade tortillas, especially if the dough is well-hydrated and you're using cast iron or a good nonstick pan. However, a touch of oil can prevent sticking if needed.

Tips

Let the dough rest for 30 minutes after kneading and 45 minutes after the dough is divided into eight balls. This helps the gluten relax making a soft but pliable dough.

Cook each tortilla for 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side, or until it puffs slightly and develops golden brown spots.

For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free flour instead of all-purpose flour.

Make a big batch of tortillas and freeze the extras. Simply stack them between layers of parchment paper and store them in an airtight container in the freezer. To reheat, wrap them in a damp paper towel and microwave for 20-30 seconds, or until warm.

How to store homemade tortillas

To store homemade tortillas, follow these steps:

1. Allow the tortillas to cool completely to room temperature after cooking.

2. Stack the tortillas with parchment or wax paper between each one to prevent sticking.

3. Place the stacked tortillas in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. Check out these environmentally friendly Reusable Bags Here

4. Store the container in the refrigerator for short-term storage (up to 1 week) or in the freezer for longer-term storage (up to 3 months).

5. When ready to use, reheat the tortillas on a hot skillet or in the microwave until warmed through.

Ingredients & Instructions

- 3 cups all-purpose flour

- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

-1 teaspoon salt

- 3/4 cup warm water

- 1/2 cup Crisco

1. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

2. Add the Crisco:

Blend the Crisco into the flour mixture using a Pastry Cutter or your hands until thoroughly combined, resulting in a coarse crumbly texture.

Flour and Crisco
Combine the Crisco and flour until the mixture becomes a course texture.

3. Add the water: With your hands mix the dough and form it into a ball.

4. Knead the dough: Use your hands or a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment to knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic, about 4-5 minutes. Knead the dough by pushing it forward with the bottom of the palm of your hand and folding it back onto itself.

5. Let the dough rest: Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes. This allows the gluten to relax, making a soft but pliable dough that will be easy to roll.

6. Divide: Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball. Cover with a kitchen towel and let the dough rest for an additional 45 minutes.

7. Roll the dough: On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll out each ball into a thin circle, about 6-8 inches in diameter. You can use a tortilla press to make the process even faster.

8. Cook the tortillas: Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place a rolled-out tortilla onto the skillet and cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side or until golden brown spots start to form.

9. Keep warm: As you cook each tortilla, transfer them to a plate and cover them with a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and pliable.

10. Serve and enjoy: Once all the tortillas are cooked, fill them with your favorite taco ingredients or make a quesadilla or a breakfast burrito.

With just a few simple ingredients you can create homemade tortilla shells that are sure to impress. So why not skip the store-bought versions and give homemade tortillas a try? You won’t be disappointed.
